Week 6 of the Copa Corona MX will present a couple of clashes between Liga MX sides including Morelia hosting Leon at the Estadio Morelos this Tuesday, February 28, 2017 (5:00 PM Pacific). The match will be an interesting one with both teams struggling in the Liga MX, but doing well in the Copa MX competition.
Monarcas Morelia is fighting relegation in the Liga MX, currently in 13th place with nine points and last on the relegation table with 103 points. In the Copa MX, the team is finding success with six points, just three back of Leon and close to a spot in the knockout stages. The win or draw can be vital for the team from Michoacán as it will ensure their place in the next round, without worrying about goal differential or any other factors. The Monarcas are coming from a big 3-1 win against second division side, Zacatepec in the tournament.
Roberto Hernandez has switched up the team since taking over as head coach, some players who were regular starters in the Liga MX are now frequent starters in the Copa MX. Some of the standout players include Carlos Adrian Morales, Facundo Erpen, Jorge Zarate and Mario Osuna. Other interesting players include Cristian Penilla, Gaston Lezcano and Luis Gabriel Rey, Lazcano of course a fresh signing who has yet to debut in the Liga MX.
The Argentine forward has played in the Copa MX, however getting a goal in his lone appearance against Zacatepec in week 5 of the competition. Morelia is an intriguing team in the Copa MX, that could possibly make it far in the tournament.
Leon is a train wreck in the Liga MX, in last place with five points and not having won a game since week 2 of the Clausura. The Copa MX on the other hand has been a completely different story for the ‘esmeraldas’ going undefeated with 10 goals.
Three players having scored two goals each in the competition for ‘la fiera’ in Mauro Boselli, Carlos Guzman and Diego Novaretti. The ‘panzas verdes’ latestes result in the Copa MX was a 4-0 win against Zacatepec in week 4 of the tournament. Javier Torrente presented a strong side with players like Mauro Boselli, Elias Hernandez, Luis Montes and Diego Novaretti.
With Leon already guaranteed a spot in the next phase of the competition, it is highly unlikely that Torrente will use many key Liga MX starters in the match. But it will be interesting to see how the team does coming from a tough 2-0 loss to Atlas in week 8 of the Liga MX.
