Sheringham explains how Tottenham nearly signed Maradona

According to former Tottenham footballer Teddy Sheringham, the North London club almost signed Argentinean legend Diego Maradona.

Maradona is regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time after legendary performances for Barcelona, Napoli and the Argentina national team. Former Spurs boss Ossie Ardiles attempted to bring him to White Hart Lane as he approached the end of his career.

Ardiles apparently asked Sheringham for his opinion on Maradona before he had decided that he did not want to sign the player.

“I got on really well with Ossie, and I think I was the captain at the time, and Ossie came to me one day and said ‘I want your opinion, I’m thinking about signing someone’,” Sheringham told Stadium Astro.

“And I was like ‘go on’ and he was like ‘Diego Maradona’, and I went ‘Ossie, Ossie, really!? Are you? Do it, just do it’.

Sheringham was disappointed that Maradona was not signed but that disappointment was not long lasting as Jurgen Klinnsman soon arrived at Spurs.
