The quarter-finals of the CONCACAF Champions League will commence this Tuesday, February 21, 2017 (6:00 PM Pacific) as Deportivo Saprissa will host Pachuca at the Estadio Ricardo Saprissa Ayma in Costa Rica. Both teams are doing well domestically with Saprissa in fifth place and Pachuca in sixth place, which should make for a great match-up.
Deportivo Saprissa has been the best team in Costa Rica for years now, being the current champions and winning the Costa Rican Primera Division 32 times. Carlos Watson’s side is having a successful campaign domestically in fifth place only two points back of Limon F.C. in first place. Saprissa is coming off a big 4-1 against Liberia. The main player to watch on the ‘morados’ will be top goal-scorer, Daniel Colindres who leads Saprissa with four goals on the season. The Costa Rican team have only lost once at the Estadio Ricardo Saprissa Ayma this season. The home-field advantage could prove to be a deciding factor in this match.
Pachuca is the favorite in the match, because the ‘tuzos’ do have a stronger roster and play in a much more competitive league. Diego Alonso has done a fine job in this Clausura 2017, accumulating 11 points in the competition, only five back of Toluca in first place. Pachuca’s defense led by Oscar Murillo has been the strongest component of the team, providing three shutouts in this Clausura. The offense on the other hand has struggled only providing three goals after the team’s 4-2 win over Leon in week 1 of the Clausura.
The main player in attack for the ‘tuzos’, Hirving Lozano will need to step up in this crucial match as he has not scored since week 1 of the tournament. Franco Jara is a key player that could also provide the offense for Diego Alonso in this game as the Argentine excels at positioning himself to provide the goals. Pachuca has been one of the better teams in the league at passing, posting a 76.2 percent passing accuracy collectively as a unit. This game will be far from easy for Pachuca and it should be a great match between two of the better teams in the CONCACAF.
