In one of the most mismatched encounters of this week 7 of the Liga MX Clausura 2017 Morelia will host Toluca at the Estadio Morelos this Saturday, February 18, 2017 (5:00 PM Pacific). Morelia needs points to stay in the league, while Toluca needs points to win the league, which should make for a hard-fought encounter.
Morelia is currently in a transitional stage as Pablo Marini is gone and interim manager, Roberto Hernandez has stepped up as the new manager. Hernandez made a great first impression with the team beating Chiapas 2-1 away from home in a direct relegation game in week 6 of the competition. The team still had several defensive issues as an own goal did fall, and Carlos Felipe Rodriguez had to be a main figure in the game for Morelia to get the win.
Moises Munoz’s cousin, Carlos Felipe Rodriguez has been one of the main goalkeepers of the tournament with 26 saves on the Clausura. The midfield for ‘la monarquia’ has really been its strongest component with players like Rodrigo Millar, Juan Pablo Rodriguez and Andy Polo. The Peruvian, Polo has been impressive in his limited playing time providing a 78.4 percent pass accuracy and a goal in only 201 minutes of play this tournament. Roberto Hernandez’s side will have a seemingly impossible task in this week 7 facing Toluca.
The ’diablos’ are currently in first place with 13 points on the tournament and only one loss. Toluca is one of the most balanced teams in this tournament with a great manager in Hernan Cristante at the helm. The main figure in attack has been Fernando Uribe with two goals and two assists in five games and Gabriel Hauche has also helped in attack with a goal and an assist. The ‘diablos’ midfield is obviously the strongest component of this Toluca team with players like Rubens Sambueza, Jesus Mendez and Pablo Barrientos.
The defense has also done its shift with Rodrigo Salinas providing solid work in the fullback slot having recovered the ball 87 times and having covered 58.7 kilometers. Toluca have been undefeated in its last three games, winning the last two. Morelia should not present a problem for Hernan Cristante’s men as they are the clear favorites in this match.
