Veteran Sunderland forward, Jermain Defoe has revealed that he is delighted after earning comparisons with legendary Sunderland goal poachers Kevin Phillips and Niall Quinn.

Defoe has been superb this season for the Black Cats, netting 14 goals – which is more than half of the team’s total goals.

His performances are also likely to determine whether Sunderland remain in the Premier League beyond this season or not.

Despite being 34-years-old, Defoe has a strong chance of breaking his league record as he is just four short of the 18 he amassed during the 2009/10 season with Tottenham.

The forward earned comparisons to Quinn and Phillips, after he was named the North East Football Writers Player of the Year during the weekend.

“It is an incentive, you always want to do well,” said Defoe, when asked about the inevitable comparisons with Quinn and Phillips, “It doesn’t matter what position you play, you always want to do well and you look at the players who have played for the football club and if I can do that then great.”
