In one of the least enticing match-ups in week 6 of the Liga MX Clausura 2017 Queretaro will host Leon at the Estadio Corregidora this Saturday, February 11, 2017 (3:00 PM Pacific). Both teams are struggling to sum up points in this tournament and will be looking to seek the three points from the match.
Queretaro have been one of the worst teams in this Clausura 2017, in penultimate place with only three points. Victor Manuel Vucetich was fired, four weeks into the competition and was replaced by his assistant, Jaime Lozano. ‘El Jimmy’ did not seem to make much of an impact in his first game in charge of the ‘gallos blancos’ drawing 1-1 to Cruz Azul. The team did not look distinct from its days when Vucetich was in charge, utilizing a very bland, defensive style of play against ‘la maquina’. The positive to take from the encounter at the Estadio Azul is that Queretaro finally managed to score a goal in the Clausura 2017.
The goal came from Luis Miguel Noriega, who scored an own-goal and a goal for Queretaro in its 1-1 draw. The ‘gallos blancos’ need to desperately find a way to score goals going into this match and going forward in the Clausura. Angel Sepulveda and Camilo Sanvezzo were not the answer for Jaime Lozano last week, perhaps starting Edgar Benitez or Emmanuel Villa can make the difference for this Queretaro side.
Leon is coming from a huge 4-2 defeat to Club Tijuana last week at the Nou Camp. The ‘esmeraldas’ have been off to a disappointing start in this Clausura 2017 only accumulating four points. It is said that manager, Javier Torrente could be the next manager to be sacked if the results do not come for the ‘panzas verdes’. This Leon team is struggling, but has shown its moments throughout the season, most notably, Carlos Pena has been outstanding with the team. ‘El Gullit’ has scored two goals in limited playing time and is a man who should crack Torrente’s starting 11, week in and week out.
A worrying factor for Leon is the lack of production from captain, Mauro Boselli, who is yet to score this season. Maybe it is time for Torrente to experiment with this Leon team and give German Cano a chance to start alongside, Boselli to increase production going forward. It will certainly be an interesting game, with the various options the managers have, to vary the squads. Leon should be the team to come out on top, but it should be a hard-fought encounter.
