Week 6 of the Liga MX Clausura 2017 will be filled with many great match-ups like Monterrey hosting Pumas UNAM at the Estadio BBVA Bancomer this Saturday, February 11, 2017 (5:00 PM Pacific). Both teams are playoff candidates and need the three points which should make for a great game.
Monterrey is a team that has not played to its potential, gaining seven points in five jornadas. With the roster that Antonio Mohamed does possess, his team should be in the top three spots of the Liga MX. Perhaps the most impressive player for Mohamed this season has been young center-back Cesar Montes, who is reportedly wanted by Benfica in Portugal. Monterrey has a deadly attack with players like Rogelio Funes Mori, Dorlan Pabon, Carlos Sanchez and Edwin Cardona. Colombian midfielder, Edwin Cardona is an interesting case with the ‘rayados’ as he has only started one game this season. Cardona must feature for Antonio Mohamed if he wants successful results, as he has shown to be one of the best players in the league at times.
Funes Mori and Pabon have been a dynamic duo up top for the ‘rayados’ as they have combined for, four goals in five games. Another key player for Mohamed this season has been midfielder, Jesus Molina who has done a marvelous job in that holding midfield role, controlling, defending and even going forward well. If Monterrey wants to make playoffs in this highly competitive Liga MX Clausura 2017 tournament they must win these key games at home. The Estadio BBVA Bancomer does provide a home-field advantage that Mohamed and the ‘rayados’ must take advantage of.
They will certainly have a tough opponent in Pumas UNAM, who is in third place in the Clausura 2017 with nine points. Paco Palencia’s men have only lost one game this season and are looking to be a contender for the title. The most impressive component of the ‘universitarios’ this tournament has been their defense made up of veterans Dario Veron and Gerardo Alcoba. Also, featuring youngsters, Josecarlos Van Rankin and Alan Mendoza as the fullbacks. Veron is among the players who has recovered the ball the most, having done it 121 times this season.
Among the most underappreciated players on this Pumas side is long-time player, Javier Cortez. The Mexican midfielder has two assists this season and has the most passes that have led to a shot on goal with 12. Of course, Nicolas Castillo will be the main man to watch for in attack for Pumas as he has been effective, scoring two goals in just four games. The match will be interesting with two stacked squads going up against each other and is a must watch for this jornada.
