The Mexico national team will host Iceland in an international friendly match at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada this Wednesday, February 8, 2017. (7:06 PM Pacific). Both teams will have squads made of mostly domestic league players, which gives both managers an opportunity to explore other options available to them for future international matches.
Mexico will play its first ever match in Las Vegas and will be looking to take the victory against what seems like a much weaker opponent in Iceland. Juan Carlos Osorio presented a solid list of call-ups for this match, with all the players coming from the Liga MX with the exception of LA Galaxy’s, Giovani Dos Santos. The call-ups also include three players who have never received a cap for Mexico in goalkeeper, Hugo Gonzalez, and defenders Edson Alvarez and Luis Reyes.
Osorio did present several young options for this match-up as eleven players on the roster do not exceed the age of 25 and the squads average age is only 26. Some interesting players to look out for could be some of the younger players like Jurgen Damm, Orbelin Pineda, Erick Gutierrez, and Hirving Lozano. It was also recently reported that goalkeeper Jose de Jesus Corona will not be available for the encounter because of an injury, leaving Alfredo Talavera as the likely man to start in net for ‘el tri’.
Of course, while Mexico is the clear favorite for the match, the players must not be overly confident to avoid a result like USA vs Serbia earlier this year at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego. The USMNT came in as favorites against a Serbian side that was using mainly domestic league players and came away with a 0-0 draw. As mentioned previously, Iceland will be made of mostly players who play domestically with no one from the Euro 2016 roster being present for this match.
Like Juan Carlos Osorio, Iceland head coach Heimer Hallgrimsson will also present a very young roster with only five players exceeding the age of 25. Perhaps the most experienced player on this Iceland squad is Hallgrimur Jonasson, who has 15 caps and three goals with the Vikings.
