Leeds beat Newcastle United to major signing

Leeds United have beaten Newcastle, Real Sociedad and Sporting Gijon to the signing of Villarreal winger Alfonso Pedraza, as confirmed by the Birmingham Mail and the club’s official website.

The presence of Pedraza is set to boost the hopes of Leeds of advancing to the Premier League next season. The Spain under 21 international spent the first half of the season on loan with Spanish Segunda division side Lugo.

Villareal will now have to pay a fee to terminate the players’ loan deal with the team and send him to England. The deal will consist of Leeds signing the player on loan until the end of the season.

However should they be promoted to the Premier League, they will receive the option of signing him permanently for a figure believed to be in the region of £8.5 million.

Pedraza has been on fine form for Lugo this season which attracted the interest of a multitude of clubs. He scored six goals and banged eight assists during 22 games for Lugo.
