Nigel Clough explains why he rejected Nottingham Forest

Burton Albion manager Nigel Clough has reportedly said (Nottingham Post) that it was a matter of principles taught to him by his father that influenced his decision to remain with his current club and reject the chance to return to Nottingham Forest.

Clough also added that rejecting the chance to manage his former club where be played under his father Brian, was the hardest decision of his career.

He added that the decision was not made in spite of Forest but in remaining loyal to the Burton cause and keeping the team in the Championship. Loyalty is something that is not easy to find in the world of football today and Clough is a figure who should be saluted for choosing to remain loyal to the fans and personnel of Burton.

Even after making the Forest team in 1985, Clough’s father famously made him continue playing for Sunday League team AC Hunters. He credits this as teaching him the value of loyalty.
