We are a step closer to finding out who will represent Africa in the 2017 Confederations Cup. The first of two AFCON 2017 semifinals will take place this Wednesday, February 1, 2017 (11:00 AM Pacific) when Burkina Faso face Egypt at the Stade d’Angondje in Gabon.
While Egypt is a household name in the competition, Burkina Faso has been a dark horse in the competition coming from a convincing 2-0 win against Tunisia in the quarter-finals. Coach, Paulo Duarte has counted with five different goal-scorers up to this stage of the competition, getting contributors from all components of the team.
The only player who has scored more than a goal for the Stallions in the competition has been Prejuce Nakoulma who scored against Tunisia in the quarter-finals and against host, Gabon in the group stages of the tournament. Oddly enough both goals fell at the Stade d’Angondje, so Nakoulma could prove to be crucial to his country yet again at this stadium.
Egypt did not look convincing in their 1-0 win over Morocco last Sunday, where an 88th minute goal by Mahmoud Kahraba via a corner-kick gave the Pharos the victory. Mohamed Salah is the obvious key player for Egypt going forward and creating chances. But their defense has been the best in the AFCON, not conceding a goal yet up to this point of the tournament.
While most of Hector Cuper’s squad does militate domestically in the Northeastern-African nation, he does count with a few exports. This would include two players in the BPL in Stoke City’s Ramadan Sobhi and Arsenal’s Mohamed Elneny. It is hard to say who will come out victorious in this match, it will certainly be a hard-fought encounter which will be worth watching.
