The AFCON 2017 Quarterfinals will resume on Sunday, January 29, 2017 (8:00 AM Pacific) with DR Congo facing Ghana at the Stade d’Oyem in Gabon. Both teams have several players who form part of European clubs which should make for a high-quality match.
DR Congo of course did not count with Everton’s Yannick Bolasie for the competition as the winger suffered from an injury that kept him out of the tournament. The Leopards were impressive in the group stages of the competition as they topped Group C, which included some tough opponents in Togo, Morocco and Ivory Coast. Florent Ibenge’s men started the tournament off hot with a 1-0 win over Morocco, then pulled an upset and drew 2-2 against Ivory Coast, finally they had a convincing 3-1 win over Togo to cement first place in Group C.
While Yannick Bolasie might be the Leopards biggest export to date, they do count with many outstanding players. Marcell Tisserand of Fc Ingolstadt in the Bundesliga, Jacques Maghoma of Birmingham City, Chancel Mbemba of Newcastle United, Jordan Ikoko of EA Guingamp and Dieumerci Mbokani of Hull City are among the standout players. Florent Ibenge also counts with some great options off the bench with players like Youssouf Mulumbu of Norwich City, Jordan Botaka of Charlton Athletic and Cedric Bakambu of La Liga side Villareal.
While DR Congo had one of the best offenses of the tournament with six goals throughout the group stages, Ghana had one of the best defenses of the competition allowing only one goal in the group stages. The Western-African side started off the group stages with two 1-0 victories over Uganda and Mali. Avram Grant’s side was finally defeated in the last game by Egypt 1-0 by a spectacular free kick by Roma’s Mohamed Salah.
The Key players to watch from this Western-African side include Daniel Amartey of Leicester City, Christian Atsu of Newcastle United and Thomas Partey of Atletico Madrid. Some standouts for Avram Grant going forward include Jordan and Andrew Ayew of Aston Villa and West Ham United and finally captain, Asamoah Gyan who will lead his team. The game filled with players who reside on European clubs should bring us quite the spectacle.
