The quarterfinals of the AFCON 2017 will present many exiting duels like Senegal facing Cameroon at the Stade de Franceville in Gabon on Saturday, January 28, 2017 (11:00 AM Pacific). Both teams were undefeated in the group stage and carry various players who militate on European sides in their squads. The level of play should be very high in this match and it should be a hard-fought encounter.
Senegal was one of the best sides in the group stages of the tournament accumulating 7 points throughout their three games of Group B. The Lions of Teranga started off with two big 2-0 victories, first against Tunisia then against Zimbabwe. Aliou Cisse’s men would finish the group stage of the tournament with a thrilling 2-2 tie against Algeria where Leicester City’s Islam Slimani would score a pair of goals for the Algerian side.
Senegal carry several Premier League players like Idrissa Gueye of Everton, Cheikhou Kouyate of West Ham, Mame Diouf of Stoke Cityand Sadio Mane of Liverpool. Apart from the BPL core, Senegal also have a strong defense who all play in Europe lead by Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly. Their midfield is led by Henri Saivet of Ligue 1 side Saint-Etienne who has already scored two goals. Another key player to watch is forward Moussa Sow of Turkish club Fennerbache who has been a key player for Aliou Cisse. The Western-African nation do have a strong chance of taking the title but will encounter a strong Cameroonian team.
Cameroon did not look great in the group stage but did come out of Group A undefeated with five points, falling just a goal short out of first place. Their road in the competition began with a 1-1 draw to Burkina Faso, then in Matchday 2 the Central-African side obtained their first victory defeating Guinea-Bissau 2-1. Finally, they secured their ticket to the knockout stages of the tournament by obtaining a 0-0 draw against host, Gabon.
Hugo Broos’ team does carry some pacey forwards like Vincent Aboubakar of Turkish club Besiktas and more notably Benjamin Moukandjo of Ligue 1 team, FC Lorient. The Cameroonians best asset is their defense led by Lyon’s Nicolas Nkoulou and 21-year-old goalkeeper, Fabrice Ondoa. The match should be intense with Senegal’s strong offense and Cameroon’s strong defense battling it out.
