Report: Manchester United still interested in Portuguese veteran

Manchester United are still showing interest in Southampton captain Jose Fonte, according to the Sun.

The Red Devils were linked with a move for the Portuguese centre-back last summer, but the transfer failed to materialize and the Euro 2016-winning defender ended up staying at the St. Mary’s Stadium.

However, the newspaper suggests Manchester United have rekindled their interest in Fonte and could make a move for him in the January transfer window.

The 32-year-old centre-back, whose current contract with the Saints is due to expire in 2018, has made 13 appearances in all competitions for Claude Puel’s side this season.

Jose Mourinho is thought to be keen to sign a new centre-back in January and could decide to go for his fellow countryman, as Fonte would also add some invaluable experience to the squad.

It’s always difficult to sign a world-class player in January as most clubs are reluctant to sell their best players in the middle of the season, which could force Mourinho to consider more realistic options.

Signing Fonte wouldn’t be especially difficult, as the Saints are known for struggling to keep their best players when a bigger club comes in with a tempting offer.
