Chelsea star talks about transfer speculation

Thibault Courtois

Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has moved to reassure the fans that his immediate future lies at Chelsea.

Courtois has chosen to clarify his situation after his interview with Marca last month angered some of Chelsea’s fan base.

The Belgian told Marca last month that he’ll be reassessing his future at Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2018 amid talk of a return to Spain.

However, he has now eased the fans’ fears by saying he wants to win trophies with Chelsea.

“I understand the commotion with the Chelsea fans, but I just meant [in the Marca interview] that I want to return to Spain one day but it can also be after my career,” Courtois told Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad.

“I’m happy to be at Chelsea. For how long we will see, but now I want to win prizes with this club.”

Courtois’ contract with Chelsea runs until the summer of 2019 and it seems like he’s leaving the door open on a return to Spanish football in the future.

Courtois joined Chelsea from Belgian side Genk in the summer of 2011, but was immediately loaned to Atletico Madrid, where he spent the next three seasons.

He established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the world during his spell at the Vicente Calderon, but has suffered a drop in form following Chelsea’s title triumph in the 2014/15 season.

Given Real Madrid’s failure to sign Manchester United’s David De Gea, the 11-time European champions could turn their attention towards Courtois.

However, Courtois is likely to stay at Chelsea at least until January 2018 as Real Madrid cannot register new players in the next two transfer windows.
