Manchester United have offered Sporting Lisbon the chance to sign Bastian Schweinsteiger on a free transfer and the Portuguese giants are now attempting to strike a deal with the midfielder, according to the Daily Record.
The report claims United are desperate to offload the former Bayern Munich player this summer and are even willing to let him leave on a free.
Sporting are believed to be keen to sign the veteran midfielder as a potential replacement for Adrien Silva, who’s being linked with a €25m move to Premier League champions Leicester City.
Schweinsteiger released an official statement on his twitter account last week, in which he insisted he wouldn’t play for another European club.
He commented on his United situation again ahead of his last international game for Germany and insisted he wants to stay at Old Trafford.
“My wish would be to continue playing for Manchester United,” Schweinsteiger said.
“I have no personal problems with Jose Mourinho. One thing is for sure: I’m not going to stop playing football.
“I still believe in my own ability. I could still help Man United if given the chance.”
Schweinsteiger seems determined to stay and fight for his place at United, but no one really knows what’s happening behind the scenes.
If the report is to be believed, the German could move to another European club this week.
It’d certainly be a good move for Schweinsteiger. Provided he can stay fit, he’d be one of Sporting’s most important players and would be able to play Champions League football again.
