Manchester United have held informal talks with Southampton over a move for Jose Fonte, according to ESPN.
The report claims Jose Mourinho wants to sign an experienced centre-back this month and has identified Fonte as the most realistic option.
ESPN go on to suggest Southampton wouldn’t stand in Fonte’s way if an acceptable offer comes in and are likely to demand around £8m for their captain.
United are believed to be set to make an official bid for the Portuguese international this week.
The Red Devils have also been linked with moves for Raphael Varane and Leonardo Bonucci this summer, but it seems like their respective clubs are unwilling to sell in this transfer window.
32-year-old Fonte, who played a major role in Portugal’s historic Euro 2016 triumph this summer, joined his current club from Crystal Palace for a reported fee of around £1.2m in 2010.
He has since established himself as one of the most consistent and reliable defenders in the Premier League.
Fonte would be a quality addition to the United team as he’d add experience and leadership to their defense.
