Report: Manchester United set to miss out on high profile target

Raphael Varane

According to reports in the Mirror, Manchester United target Raphael Varane insists he wants to stay with his current club Real Madrid.

The news of the young Frenchman staying with the current Champions League winners is a major blow to Jose Mourinho, who is known to be an admirer of the defender.

The 23-year-old, who has been with Los Blancos for the past five years, expressed his love for the fans and has insisted that he wants to be in Madrid this season.

Varane arrived in Madrid in the summer of 2011 to work with Jose Mourinho, who was managing the Spanish giants at that time, from French club Lens for a reported transfer fee of just €10 million.

The Portuguese manager is reportedly looking to bring another centre- back to the club after already obtaining the services of Eric Bailly from Villarreal.

For the past few weeks priority number one has been the ongoing pursuit of that other young Frenchman, but it appears that Mourinho would like to add another layer to the central defence.

The arrival of Bailly surely makes the United defence much stronger but if the Red Devils could of brought Varane in too, the pairing of those two along with David de Gea would of reminded United supporters of the Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Edwin van der Sar trio.
