Report: Manchester United closely following £25m-rated defender

Manchester United want to be kept informed about the situation of Monaco defender Fabinho, according to the Daily Mail.

The report suggests Monaco have promised the player he could leave this summer, but any interested club would have to meet the French club’s £25m asking price for the versatile defender.

Monaco are said to have increased their asking price from £12m to £25m after the Brazilian’s failed transfer to Napoli earlier this summer.

Fabinho, who’s one of Monaco’s key players, can play at right-back and in midfield. He scored 8 goals and provided 4 assists in 38 appearances for his club last season.

Jose Mourinho is well familiar with Fabinho. The defender spent the 2012/13 season on loan at Real Madrid B, but Mourinho decided to give him his first-team debut in Real Madrid’s 6-2 win over Malaga on May 8th, 2013.

Manchester United could do with another right-back. Antonio Valencia has struggled with injuries in recent times, Darmian has failed to convince since his move from Torino last summer, whereas Guillermo Varela looks likely to leave in search of first-team football.

Fabinho would be a quality addition to the team, but Mourinho would probably want to see Darmian in action first before deciding whether to sign another right-back.
