German Reports: Manchester United in talks over the transfer of 23-year-old defender

Old Trafford

Eintracht Frankfurt are in talks with Manchester United over a deal for Uruguayan right-back Guillermo Varela, according to German news outlet Kicker.

The report claims the German club wants to sign Varela on a season-long loan deal with an option to buy.

However, talks between the two clubs are believed to be at an early stage. The 23-year-old, who left Peñarol for Manchester United in 2013, was part of Van Gaal’s first-team squad between December 2015 and March 2016 due to Antonio Valencia’s injury problems and Matteo Darmian’s poor performances.

Varela has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford ever since Mourinho took charge of the club, but he’s training with the rest of the first team ahead of the friendly at Wigan Athletic on Saturday, so it seems like he could get his chance to impress the Portuguese manager.

If Mourinho decides to offload Varela this summer, Eintracht Frankfurt would be a very good destination for the Uruguayan.

He would be able to play regular first-team football for a decent team in one of the strongest leagues in the world.

Varela is a promising defender, but even if he stays at United, he’s unlikely to be an important first-team player.

At 23 years of age, it’s probably time to move to another club where he’d be able to grow as a player and continue his development.
