Report: Real Madrid pursue promising 22-year-old as Modric alternative

According to Marca, a Spanish sports newspaper, Real Madrid are following Valencia man André Gomes. They join fierce rivals FC Barcelona in the race for the Portuguese midfielder.

Under contract with Los Ché until 2020 and with a release clause of 120 million euros, Real would need to put at least half of that on the table. 60 million euros is still well below Pogba’s potential transfer fee.

While this interest seems to be firm, transfers between Valencia and Real Madrid have failed to materialize since the Mijatović operation in 1996. Since then, fans have pressured club presidents to deny any approach from Madrid.

However, Marca reports that Los Blancos are treating this carefully. They trust that their relationship with Peter Lim, the Valencia owner and Jorge Mendes, the player’s agent, will help the cause.

Seen as a complete midfielder, he would arrive at the Santiago Bernabéu to be Luka Modrić’s alternative. Mateo Kovačić has failed to impress and Gomes is seen as an appealing option.

Currently with his national team in the Euro 2016 semi-finals, his contribution in the tournament hasn’t been that great. Still, this won’t stop Real’s interest.

Florentino Pérez is working slowly on transfers this summer as many of Europe’s best bring strong reinforcements. Seeing how complicated this negotiation could be, they shouldn’t let other club snatch him up if the interest is firm.
