Manchester United have missed out on the signing of Basel teenager Breel Embolo as the Swiss international has signed a deal with German side Schalke, according to German news outlet BILD (Mirror – English).
The report suggests Embolo has rejected Manchester United and RB Leipzig in order to continue his career at Schalke and the deal will be formally announced once Switzerland’s Euro 2016 campaign ends.
The German club is believed to have agreed to pay €20m for the 19-year-old. Embolo, who’s likely to play in Switzerland’s Euro 2016 1/8 finals clash with Poland on Saturday, looks set to end his 6-year spell at Swiss champions Basel this summer.
He’d have been a decent option to have in the United squad, but he’s still very raw as a player and doesn’t look ready for a move to a European giant yet.
It appears as though Embolo’s made the sensible choice for his career. He’d be fancying his chances of establishing himself as a regular starter at Schalke, especially considering Leroy Sane’s expected departure this summer.
Even though Manchester United are famous for giving talented youngsters a chance to shine, there’d be much less pressure at Schalke and that’s probably influenced his decision as well.
