According to Turkish news outlet DHA, Manchester United have expressed an interest in taking Luis Nani back to Old Trafford.
The report suggests United would be willing to activate the Fenerbahce winger’s €8m release clause as Jose Mourinho is keen to add him to his squad.
United sold Nani to Fenerbahce last summer after the Portuguese international had spent the previous season on loan at Sporting CP as part of the deal that saw Marcos Rojo move to the English giants.
Despite suffering a dip in form in the latter stages of last season, the 29-year old still enjoyed a productive campaign, scoring 11 goals and making 9 assists in 43 appearances for the Turkish runners-up.
Nani’s best years are behind him, but he’d still be able to contribute to the team and would be a decent option to have.
However, the club should be looking to strengthen the right wing position with the signing of a better player that would be able to offer pace, strength and creativity to the team.
The new wide player would also need to have high defensive work rate as it’s essential for making Mourinho’s system work.
Nani doesn’t really fit the criteria anymore and the transfer is unlikely to materialize, but despite him being the subject of much criticism throughout his career, it still doesn’t erase his brilliant 2010/11 season, in which he helped United win the title by making 18 assists in the league.
