Manchester United have reportedly decided to offer veteran midfielder Michael Carrick a new one-year deal once Jose Mourinho is appointed manager, according to The Times.
The paper reports that Carrick has received lucrative offers from clubs in China and the United States, but staying at United is believed to be his priority.
The 34-year-old former English international didn’t have his best game against Crystal Palace in last weekend’s FA Cup final, but was still United’s most reliable midfielder under Van Gaal and that’s why he was a regular starter in the Dutchman’s set-up.
Mourinho would surely strengthen United’s midfield, but given the team’s participation in next season’s Europa League, Carrick could still get more than enough chances to play. If a club wants to be competitive in all competitions, having enough squad depth is absolutely essential.
With Van Gaal’s departure now done and dusted, a new era is upon Manchester United. There will probably be many new signings this summer, but the team needs the experience that Carrick provides and considering the consistency of his performances this season, retaining him for another year seems like a no brainer.
