The first-leg Copa Libertadores quarterfinal between Independiente del Valle and Pumas UNAM will be played this Tuesday, May 17, 2016 (5:45 PM Pacific) at the Estadio Olimpico Atahualpa. The winner of this series will reach the semifinals to face the winner between Nacional and Boca Juniors.

Independiente del Valle from Ecuador has had a successful and somewhat surprising Libertadores tournament thus far into the competition. The team coached by Pablo Repetto reached the knock-out stage after finishing second in Group 5 with 11 points. Their performance in the round-of-16 surprised many after they defeated Argentina’s River Plate with a 2-1 aggregate score. This Tuesday night they enter the match against Pumas as the underdog, therefore they will aim to gather a win in order to visit Mexico next week with a win under their belt.

Pumas of UNAM continue to be title contenders after defeating Deportivo Tachira in the round-of-16. The team coached by Guillermo Vazquez was eliminated ten days ago from the Liga MX, allowing them to focus entirely on the Libertadores. Pumas will have a difficult visit to Ecuador, yet they are favored to win the series.
