The first-leg of the Ascenso MX final will begin when Mineros de Zacatecas host Necaxa this Wednesday, May 4, 2016 (7:00 PM Pacific) at the Estadio Francisco Villa. This highly anticipated match in Mexico’s second tier will mean the first step to determine who will face FC Juarez for the wild-card to reach the Liga MX.
Mineros de Zacatecas has been an underdog throughout the playoffs as they entered being ranked #6 out of 7 teams. The team coached by Ricardo Rayas defeated Tapachula 3-2 (agg.) in the quarterfinals, and defeated the top ranked Universidad de Guadalajara also 3-2 (agg.) in the semifinals. The ‘rojiverdes’ will look to use their good momentum to obtain a positive result in their first-leg match when they host the favorites Necaxa.
Necaxa is favored to win the Clausura 2016 title over Mineros considering they performed better throughout the season finishing second in the general standings. Like Mineros, the team coached by Alfonso Sosa is undefeated in the playoffs where they eliminated Correcaminos in the quarterfinals 2-1 (agg.) and Atlante in the semifinals 5-3 (agg.). This Wednesday night’s match is expected to be a highly entertaining final in which Mineros will play offensively to attempt and take the lead into Aguascalientes this weekend.
