Sao Paulo reached the knock-out stage by being ranked 12th out of 16 teams that qualify into this round. The team coached by Edgardo Bauza finished second in Group 1 with 9 points just behind Argentina’s River Plate. This Thursday night, Sao Paulo will attempt to earn an important home victory as their visit into Mexico next week will be a difficult encounter. Nonetheless, they are the favorites to win the first leg considering their home support, and that Toluca just travelled a long distance to reach Sao Paulo.

Toluca enters the knock-out stage ranked 6th after winning Group 6 with 13 points. The team coached by Jose Cardozo reached the round-of-16 for the second time in their history and has performed fantastically so far into the Libertadores. To their misfortune, they now face one of the continent’s most prestigious clubs which will make it very difficult to reach the quarterfinals. Therefore, the ‘diablos rojos’ must play a perfect game this Thursday in order to enter the second-leg wih a greater chance of winning the series.
