Real Madrid is reportedly leading the race to sign Atletico Madrid defender José María Giménez by activating a buyout clause of €65 million, according to Spanish daily Marca.

Madrid will be aware that there can be no possibility of transfer discussions with Atletico Madrid. Hence, they need to match the buyout clause of €65 million to have any hope of signing the player. It may sound like a large sum of money for a defender, but Madrid are concerned about the lack of top choice central defenders they might have in the squad a few years from now.

Sergio Ramos and Pepe are into their 30s and may not have a long time left at the top of the game. Rafael Varane is still unproven on a regular basis.

This transfer is unlikely to happen due to the rivalry between the two teams and the large transfer fee required to kick-start talks.
