Everton likely to make cheeky move for international player

According to the Liverpool Echo, Everton may be considering a move for Dutch international Ron Vlaar. The Dutchman is currently a man without a club after deciding not to sign a new contract with Aston Villa over the summer.

Over the summer, the Dutchman was linked with fellow English clubs Southampton and Manchester United among others. Any potential moves were derailed after Vlaar needed surgery to repair a torn medial meniscus in his knee back in July. Original estimates had the man out until after the New Year, but all signs point to the ex-Villa captain being fit to play next month.

This could be a great pickup for the Toffees who are currently without their captain Phil Jagielka. In Jags absence Roberto Martinez has predominately gone with Ramiro Funes Mori to partner with John Stones.

Vlaar offers veteran Premier League appeal for a backline that has been shaky in the past few games without Jagielka. Even after the captain’s recovery, the Dutch international would provide the team with some needed depth at the back. The downside here for Everton to consider would be Vlaar’s long history with injuries.

It is believed that there are several other suitors across Europe for the Dutchman services, most notably from AC Milan and Inter Milan. Everton’s chances are bolstered by the fact that the defender has stated his desire to remain in the Premier League.
