Liverpool welcomes Aston Villa to Anfield at the weekend and anything less than three points could cost Brendan Rodgers his job.
Rumors of Liverpool looking at Carlo Ancelotti as a replacement were denied by the club and resurgent rumors of Jurgen Klopp moving to Merseyside could prove unlikely as reports suggest that Liverpool’s owners have been “warned against” moving for the former Dortmund manager.
After Liverpool’s stellar 2013-2014 campaign that saw them finish second to Manchester City, the Reds managed only to finish sixth the following year. In the early stages of this campaign they sit 13th, scoring only four goals in six Premier League games.
Liverpool needed 120 minutes and penalties to oust League Two Carlisle from the League Cup at Anfield. After the match, Rodgers ducked the press conference, leaving assistant coach, Gary McAllister, to provide the postgame thoughts.
“Like everybody, we’re delighted to be through to the next round,” McAllister said. “It’s a good night in the fact we are through to the next round. We want to perform better. It will get better. We are working away hard at it in training and we will persevere.”
“We’ve shown a bit of character. Delighted for Adam Bogdan to make the saves to get us through. Maybe this is just one of these things which can pull us together as we look forward to the weekend,” he added.
Rodgers could have suspected that any and all question that would be asked would be about him rather than another poor performance from his squad.
These three points at home are a necessity giving Liverpool’s poor performances dating back to last year, but maybe more so because of upcoming fixtures. At the moment, Liverpool are just four points out of the fourth spot they so desperately covet, but their next four away matches in the league: Everton, Tottenham, Chelsea, and Manchester City.
They need these three points. He needs these three points.
