Manchester United are closely following PSV Eindhoven youth sensation Jetro Willems, according to a report from TalkSport.
The 21-year old Dutch international has not yet signed a new deal with PSV, supposedly waiting until recovering from a knee injury to re-sign with the Dutch side. However, with the reported heightened interest from Manchester United and Liverpool, the Defender could choose to hop out of the Dutch league and land in the Premier League.
Willems plays at the left-back position, and already has 15 caps for the Netherlands, although young, Willems has already proven to be an effective left-back with a taste for attacking down the flank. After Luke Shaw’s injury, Manchester United are in need of a left-back, and Willems could be the perfect addition, given that they have similar playing styles.
If Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo or Ashley Young do not meet LvG’s needs at the left-back position during the next three months, we could see Manchester United making a push for Willems during the January transfer period. WIllems would join Memphis Depay, who made the jump in July.
Acquiring Jetro Willems would be a long-term investment, and given that Shaw will eventually regain his form, it will be interesting to see whether United choose to use the current squad to fill-up the left-back position, or if they go splurge on another promising, young left-back.
