Manchester United started off their campaign in decent fashion but their 2-1 defeat at the hands of Swansea City a fortnight ago, exposed the Red Devils’ shortcomings.
Now it goes without saying that United will need to bounce back as soon as possible from the disappointment and with a clash against arch rivals Liverpool up next, winning the clash has been made all the more important for the Red Devils.
It is fair to state that both United and Liverpool do not look in the best of shapes at the moment but the form book does go out of the window during clashes between these two rivals and the match should prove to be an entertaining affair.
Here is the Probable Strongest Possible Lineup for Manchester United against Liverpool –
Goalkeeper
Sergio Romero has not convinced many despite his fine clean sheet record and he was arguably at fault for conceding the second goal against Swansea City last time out.
With David De Gea remaining put at United following the deadline day transfer fiasco, it has been suggested that the Spaniard could well be reintegrated back into the squad.
However, it looks like Van Gaal will stick with Romero while De Gea might take his place on the bench during the night.
Defence
Manchester United’s most impressive aspect this season has arguably been their wonderful performances at the back.
Chris Smalling and Daley Blind have been solid at central defence while the full back duo of Matteo Darmian and Luke Shaw have been equally impressive.
As a result, van Gaal will see no reason why he should change things around. Phil Jones remains out with injury for the clash while it remains to be seen whether Marcos Rojo will be brought back from the cold.
Midfield
Michael Carrick is an injury doubt ahead of the clash and if the Englishman misses out, the duo of Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger should partner up at the middle of the park.
In the advanced positions, the trio of Memphis Depay, Ander Herrera and Juan Mata look likely to continue while £58million man Anthony Martial is likely to be on the bench after having spent very little time so far with the Red Devils’ squad.
Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia remain useful alternatives for van Gaal to choose from if things do not go according to plan during the course of the game.
Attack
Wayne Rooney managed to make history during the midweek international fixture against Switzerland by becoming England’s all time leading goal scorer.
While the achievement is most certainly incredible, Rooney has not quite found his feet at United this season as of yet and a good performance against Liverpool would be a great time to start.
