The UCL Group B match between Real Madrid and Liverpool will take place at Anfield in Liverpool, England on Wednesday, October 22nd, 2014 at 11.45am Pacific.

Five years ago, things were very different for Liverpool and Real Madrid. The Reds had Torres and Benítez and stood as one of the toughest rivals in Europe. Los Blancos had been kicked out in the Round of 16 for four consecutive seasons. Then came Anfield, a night that can only me labeled as memorable. 4-0 and Real were once again out of the UCL. Players, coaches and times have changed, still we’ll see an incredible match.

Real Madrid

There are only four surviving members from the 2009 debacle: Casillas, Pepe, Ramos and Marcelo. Ramos most likely won’t be available, while the rest are expected to start. With El Clásico on the horizon, Ancelotti will try his best to keep his best players less exhausted for that day. Ronaldo and Casillas are probably the only two safe bets. For our in-depth analysis of the possible lineup, check here.

After a bumpy start to the season, Real have drastically improved. They did suffer against Ludogorets, but the Bulgarian club is one tough competitor. With six points in the pocket, a win at Anfield could almost assure them a spot in the knockout stage. The minds of the players will be their biggest enemies. They can’t be afraid of the stadium and they can’t be thinking about Barcelona. This game requires all the attention.

Players to watch: Ronaldo, Benzema and James.

Liverpool

Since Luis Suárez’s departure, they haven’t been the same. They’ve lost a powerful man in attack, who can’t be easily replaced. In 11 matches so far they have a 5W-2D-4L, with one draw won via penalty shootouts in the League Cup. They’ve been absent from the Champions League since the 2009-2010 season, and they need to show Europe that they still are one of the best clubs in European competitions.

Only three men played that historic Round of 16 in 2009: Gerrard, Škrtel and Lucas. Nevertheless, their current squad is worthy of titles. Not being the favorite to win this game could motivate them even more. They know Real have Barça coming up, and that mental battle could make the Reds give the surprise. The Kop never let their men walk alone, and in Europe, there’s even more of a reason to give it all.

Players to watch: Coutinho, Sterling and Balotelli.

Real Madrid vs Liverpool Prediction

With the uncertainty surrounding Madrid’s lineup, it’s hard to forecast a result. Liverpool are a bit unstable in the Premier League, yet you can’t tell how motivated they’ll get. What seems to be clear, is that the game won’t be a day off for neither of the clubs. Both coaches will send their best men out, and they’ll be strong enough to get the three points to either side. The revenge from the 2009 catastrophe could be a key factor.

Real Madrid 3-2 Liverpool
