The appointment of Louis van Gaal as Manchester United manager was certainly expected to bring about a major revolution at the club – especially after the horrid reign of former boss David Moyes and it has certainly proven to be the case so far.

Van Gaal has brought in six new players at Old Trafford the summer – spending in excess of a whopping £150million and on the other side of the spectrum, the Dutchman has allowed no less than 14 first team members to depart the club.

Undoubtedly, the past 18 months or so have been very difficult for the United fans and they are now finally excited at a dawn of a new era for the Red Devils, with world class players such as Radamel Falcao, Angel Di Maria and Daley Blind set to be leading the club away from the wilderness.

While there is certainly excitement surrounding Old Trafford at the moment – some fans may well look back poignantly at the fact that many of the players who played a huge role in the club’s success over the years under Sir Alex Ferguson had to be unceremoniously sacrificed.

Club legends Ryan Giggs, Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra all called time on their careers at United while popular figures such as Javier Hernandez, Shinji Kagawa and Danny Welbeck were offloaded as well.

As United have proved this summer, things change very quickly in football and there is no room for sentiments whatsoever.

Here is an image which perfectly illustrates the mass overhaul United have gone through since Louis van Gaal took over from former manager David Moyes.
