Liverpool Chases Their Biggest Target of the Season

Liverpool FC has had a busy summer, one that saw 11 Reds play in the World Cup, a preseason tournament that ended with a second place finish in the Guinness International Champions Cup, and seven new players sign with Liverpool.

However, Brendan Rodgers may be saving his best moves for the final weeks of the summer, by signing a bigger name than all the others.

Italian journalist Mina Rzouki is now reporting that Liverpool have claimed the advantage in the pursuit of Colombian striker, Radamel Falcao.  She has reason to believe that Liverpool, and Manchester City, have leapfrogged Real Madrid in the chase for Falcao.

Radamel Falcao spent last season in France, playing with Monaco, where he scored 11 goals before injuring his left ACL in January, and missing the rest of the season.  The injury had scared off some suitors, but after a couple solid performances in the preseason with Monaco, teams are now calling for Falcao.

The Daily Mail is reporting that Real Madrid still leads the race for the striker.  However, the salary that Falcao receives (£220,000 a week) is a price that Liverpool is willing to pay.  Liverpool is offering a loan deal that could turn into a permanent signing.  That signing would be in the neighborhood of £30-35 million.

But why offer more money for a player coming off a serious knee injury than the wages paid to Luis Suarez?

Falcao is the well known name that could replace Suarez that Brendan Rodgers has been waiting for.  Falcao scored 70 goals in his two years with Atletico Madrid; before his 11 last year in his shortened season.

Simply put, Radamel Falcao can score.  He would bring a different dimension to Liverpool, which is something that has Rodgers very excited.  Falcao has an aerial presence that is better than anyone else on Liverpool right now, except for Martin Škrtel.  Falcao also has really good skill with his long range shooting, which Liverpool was terrible at last year.

New addition Rickie Lambert has not shown great skill yet for his new team.  He has not scored yet in the preseason friendlies and he has missed a couple point-blank shots for Liverpool.  Falcao could come in and push Lambert to greater success, as he continues to rehab his knee, and then take over the striker’s spot once he is fully fit again.

All the additions so far for Liverpool have been good, but adding Falcao would be a terrific signing. The 28-year-old, when healthy, would bring more to the pitch and would be able to add a whole new worry for opposing managers.
