According to The Daily Star, Liverpool are very much interested in signing Ashley Cole. Cole’s contract runs out this summer, so he is available to sign with any club and Liverpool may be that team.

Ashley Cole has been on the bench most of the season behind Cesar Azpilicueta at that left back spot for Chelsea. Cole looks set to leave Chelsea and go to a club where he can make the starting eleven and Liverpool need to improve in the backline.

Brendan Rodgers knows Cole from his days at Chelsea when he was an assistant. Rodgers is a big fan and it is possible that Cole could go to Liverpool and play a big part for them next season.

Liverpool are set to face competition from New York Red Bulls in the MLS, who seem to want to sign the England left back. Cole is a solid defender but also can help in the attack.

This transfer rumor is coming from The Daily Star, so it is reliable and thus gets a 6 out of 10 in rumour strength.

Liverpool have frailties in the backline and signing Ashley Cole on a free transfer would be good business. Cole is still a good left back and will bring quality but also experience in winning trophies.

I think if Liverpool are able to sign Cole it would strengthen their squad at a left back position. Cole isn’t the best left back in the world, but he still is a top player and can help Liverpool, so I give it an 8 out of 10 in that regard.

I do see Cole leaving Chelsea at season’s end as he has only played a bit part this season for the Premier League leaders. Cole can still start in clubs around the world and I don’t see why he would stick around and sit on the bench. Liverpool need defensive help and Cole needs to find a squad where he can play week after week and this might be the perfect fit. I give this about a 60 percent chance of happening as we still have to wait and see what other clubs are in for the 33 year old left back.
