Speculations surrounding Robin van Persie’s return to Arsenal were bound to surface as the Gunners are set to face Manchester outfit Manchester United on Wednesday night at the Emirates. The Red Devils, seventh on the league standings, have struggled to find form throughout the season with the possibility of a top four finish seeming ever harder.

With Arsenal progressing to the fifth round of the FA Cup, the knock out stages of the Champions League and a staggering 14 points above champions Manchester United, Arsenal fans can only but imagine what would have become had their ‘captain van perfect’ not left.

Asked if van Persie could return to Arsenal at his pre-match conference, Wenger said: “I don’t think that’s an ideal subject for us to speak about.”

The Dutch forward, who has since won the Premier League and the FA Community Shield since joining United in the summer of 2012, has had a dreadful second season that has seen him struggle to find form and fitness due to injuries.

Arsenal hopefuls will, however, be weary of their former talisman, as he has scored in all of the three games against his former team Arsenal, including on his first return to the Emirates as a Manchester United player.

As for the 30-year old striker re-signing for Arsenal, only time will tell.
