The Flamengo vs Fluminense ‘Campeonato Carioca’ match will take place this Saturday, February 8, 2014 (1:30 PM Pacific) at the Estadio do Maracana.  The ‘Tricolor Carioca’ and the ‘Rubro-Negro’ meet in the 7th Match Week of the Carioca tournament in a match between the first place (Flamengo), and second place (Fluminense).  Considering the good form both sides are in, this version of the Fla-Flu classic has the ingredients to become an exciting match.

Flamengo will go into the match with high confidence after defeating Boavista 5-2 in their last match.  This classic will be the last test for the team coached by Jaime de Almeida before their game against Club Leon from Mexico in the Copa Libertadores 2014.  Unfortunately for the Mengão, playing during the week could force them to use a line-up with some reserves in the Fla-Flu in order to be in perfect form for the match in Leon.  However, that could allow several substitutes to obtain good playing time in their preparation for the bigger tournaments this calendar year.

The team coached by Renato Gaucho needs to win this Saturday, otherwise the distance in the standings between them and their rivals Flamengo could be too much.  Fluminense in currently in 2nd place with 13 points (3 behind 1st place Flamengo), where a win would tie them, while a 3-0 score will place them in the top position. Sadly, the Tricolor will have to play without their star striker, Fred, who suffered an injury during the week.

Flamengo vs Fluminense Prediction

The Flamengo vs Fluminense classic will be played in a tremendous atmosphere at the majestic Maracana.  Both sides not only have the need to win due to the top rivalry, but the win is essential in their aspirations at earning the first place of the Carioca tournament.  While Flamengo is in great form, they have to be careful in using all of their starters as they face a difficult Copa Libertadores match against Club Leon during the week.  That could mean coach Almeida will not use his best team, which will give Fluminense the upside.  In a close contest, the Flamengo vs Fluminense match will end in a 2-3 win for the Fluzão.
