The final for the Clausura 2013 Liga MX season is set, and it will feature two of Mexico’s biggest teams. The America vs Cruz Azul final is the match that everyone had hoped to see when the playoffs started (specially the TV stations, as this promises to be the highest rated final in recent years). Both teams have played extremely well throughout the playoffs, and fully deserve to fight for the title.

The schedule for the Liga MX Final series will be:

  • First Leg: Estadio Azul, Thursday, May 23, 2013 (7:00 PM Pacific)
  • Second Leg: Estadio Azteca, Sunday, May 26, 2013 (6:00 PM Pacific)

America and Cruz Azul have a long history in the playoffs. They have met each other 10 times in the Liguilla: 4 times in the quarterfinals, 4 in the semifinals, and twice in the finals. Club America has a resounding advantage in these 10 series, having won 7 out of 10 times. However, these statistics span through 40 years of Mexican soccer history, and have very little relevance on what will happen this upcoming week.

Other interesting facts to notice, are that Cruz Azul has not won a league title in 15 years, in fact, the Copa MX trophy they won this season was the first piece of silverware earned in 15 years. If Club America wins the championship, it would gain it’s 11th title trophy, thus equaling Chivas’ amount of titles earned.

Who will win the title? It will be a tight series, as both teams have been playing very well recently, and both have quality players. Cruz Azul scored 9 goals through 4 matches in the playoffs, while America also overwhelmed both of its opponents. It’s a very hard prediction to make, but I believe that Club America will win. Chucho Benitez is on fire, and the weight and support provided by the Estadio Azteca in the return leg will lift them to the title.
