Atlas faces top Liga MX side, Toluca, in Week 10 of the Liga MX this Saturday, September 29, 2012 (10:00 PM EDT) at the Estadio Jalisco. In one of the most interesting games of the week, Atlas hosts Toluca in a game that could decide the route of the ‘rojinegros this season. Toluca knows that a victory puts them closer to the playoffs, and would also keep them in first place of the league.
Atlas is coming from three straight draws and currently sits in the lower-mid of the regular standings with ten points after nine games. Although they have only received six goals and have the league’s top defense, Atlas has been terrible at offense and that has forced the team into seven draws. The rojinegros have a compact midfield, but there is a gap between the middle of the field and the offense. In order for Atlas to win and push away from the relegation battle, they will need to take advantage of their few scoring opportunities.
The red devils of Toluca won their previous match against Atlante. Toluca has played a balanced style of soccer in which the midfield defends first and attacks later. This has allowed the team to receive few goals, but points are made with goals, and these have been achieved mainly via set-pieces and the counter-attack. Against Atlas they have a difficult match, but if Toluca plays like they have been most of the year, they will remain on top of the regular standings.
Prediction: Both teams have great defenses and a balanced midfield. However, Toluca has the better offense but that will not make the difference Saturday night. Coach Tomas Boy has brought a new attitude to Atlas, and goals will start to come in. Atlas will win a fun match, 2-1.
