Mexico won a very entertaining quarterfinal match against Senegal 4-2, and will play against Japan in the semifinals of the London Olympics soccer tournament. There was a moment in Wembley Stadium where it appeared that Mexico would calmly advance to the semifinals, however, Enriquez’ and Aquino’s goals weren’t enough, as Senegal was able to tie the game 2-2 in the second half. The match would have to be defined in overtime.
After Mexico took the 2-0 lead in the 62nd minute, I believe Tena committed a mistake by pulling back and handing possession over to Senegal. The African squad had proven in the first half how dangerous it could be when it controlled the ball; it was only due to Corona’s saves that Mexico was able to maintain a clean sheet in the first half. With possession of the ball, Senegal attacked relentlessly and tied up the game by the 75th minute.
Overtime was a different story, Mexico maintained control of the ball most of the time, thus limiting the Senegalese attack. In the end, it was two mistakes which led to Mexico’s goals, and a spot in Tuesday’s semifinal match against Japan.
