This past Sunday, January 27, 2019, Pumas UNAM officially announced that manager David Patino had been relieved of his duties and Bruno Marioni would step in his place. Patino had been in charge of the Mexico City team since the 2017 Apertura tournament and had a record of 15 wins, 11 draws and 12 losses in regular season play.

Patino had led Pumas UNAM to the playoffs in his last two seasons and his best finish came last season when the university side finished third on the league table. The Mexican manager had a rocky start to 2019 with no wins, two draws and two losses, but Pumas’ decision to part ways with him may have come a bit early.

Bruno Marioni had an extensive playing career ranging from 1995-2009, having major success in his native Argentina and in Mexico with Pumas UNAM and Toluca. Marioni also played in Mexico with Pachuca, Atlas and Tecos UAG before his career came to a close.

The Argentine manager began his managerial career in Mexico’s second-tier league with Venados de Merida and stayed there until he was relieved of his duties last season. Marioni made the playoffs once with Venados de Merida in four seasons with the team and will now have the biggest task in his young managerial career.
