Liga MX Jornada 4 Power Rankings

Time flies in the short seasons of the Liga MX, and as many other leagues around the world just opened this weekend, Mexico’s top flight passed what is essentially the quarter mark of the regular season. Every team has got four matches under their belt at this point and we are starting to get a picture of who is for real and who is in over their head.

Of course, with 13 games left to play, anybody’s season could do a complete 180 degree spin, but here are the top teams in the Liga MX right now. This part gets lost sometimes in power rankings, but remember that this list is a lot about who has momentum at this exact moment and not necessarily who has the best roster on paper. Anyway, without further ado, let’s get into it!

#1 Club América (3W-0D-1L)

Las Aguilas seize the top spot with an impressive victory over undefeated Rayados. They’ve looked fantastic since their slip up in the opener.

#2 Cruz Azul (3-1-0)

They’ve got the best defense in the league and although they didn’t come easily, good results against Tigres and at Tijuana cannot be ignored.

#3 Pumas UNAM (3-1-0)

Pumas have only conceded goals in one match this season; the crazy 5-3 affair with Necaxa. Although they played out a sluggish 0-0 draw with Pachuca, it’s hard to criticize this team’s performance so far this year.

#4 Santos Laguna (3-0-1)

Despite the coaching staff dilemma and the loss of top striker Djaniny, the reigning champs have won two in a row and had an impressive comeback on the road against Chivas.

#5 Toluca (2-1-1)

A week ago they would’ve ranked lower, but a comeback win on the road at El Volcan is extremely impressive, and restored the positive momentum that was lost after the Chivas game.

#6 Monterrey (3-0-1)

They took a bad loss to América over the weekend, but we can’t forget that they were perfect in the weeks prior.

#7 Monarcas Morelia (2-1-1)

Forever the quiet, rarely spoken about team of Liga MX, Monarcas have put together another strong start, even after losing Raul Ruidiaz to MLS. They’ve held serve at home so far this season.

#8 León (1-1-2)

Perhaps the best result of Jornada 4 was Leon getting their season on track with a huge 4-0 victory over Querétaro. La Fiera played a very difficult schedule the first few weeks of the season, so don’t let that points total deceive you.

#9 Tigres UANL (2-0-2)

After a 2-0 start to the season, Tigres have looked progressively worse in each game, dropping their Week 3 match to Cruz Azul and blowing a home lead to Toluca on Saturday night. They need a spark.

#10 Necaxa (2-0-2)

They started off the season in strong fashion, but Los Rayos have been getting less impressive results in recent matches, even if they played well against Morelia.

#11 Tijuana (1-2-1)

Tijuana have played three home games already and earned all five of their points from them, but no results have come easily for the Xolos.

#12 Veracruz (1-1-2)

Los Tiburones picked up a good road win and honestly have not looked all that bad the past two weeks; a stark contrast to Jornadas 1 and 2, when they were abysmal.

#13 Lobos BUAP (1-1-2)

Lobos are never really good looking but they’ve been solid defensively and have taken care of business at home.

#14 Querétaro (1-1-2)

They looked like an average team for a while but this loss to León has many questioning their belief in this team. La Fiera made them look very, very, very, bad.

#15 Puebla (1-0-3)

It feels like the win over Toluca was really just a fluke, as Puebla have followed it up with two poor performances including this week’s home loss to Veracruz.

#16 Pachuca (0-1-3)

Pachuca sit dead last in the table, but I can at least say they’ve played a very difficult schedule so far. Keisuke Honda’s departure was a death sentence.

#17 Chivas (0-1-3)

Yeah, they’ve put up some good fights, but they cannot play for a full 90 minutes. They’ve been in position to get results but have squandered it every time.

#18 Atlas (0-2-2)

Not really anything good to say about these guys. They can’t score.
