Leeds man prepared to fight for his place after being close to January exit

Leeds United goalkeeper Andy Lonergan has revealed that he is prepared to fight for his place after a move to Sunderland fell through during the transfer window.

The veteran shot-stopper opted to remain at Elland Road despite receiving an offer from the Black Cats, were he would have likely received the opportunity to play first-team football.

The 34-year-old did manage to win the Whites first-choice goalkeeping position for a short period of time this season from Felix Wiedwald but ended up losing his position in November following a number of high-profile mistakes.

His only appearance since came during the FA Cup defeat at the hands of Newport County last month.

“I got an offer which would have provided more stability for me and my family, but in the end it didn`t feel right,” Lonergan told the Leeds official website.

“I want to stay at Leeds and fight for my place and continue to be part of what is a brilliant dressing room, which we currently have.”
