Ex-Leeds man believes the Whites need a better replacement for this starter

Leeds have had a regular starting XI under manager Thomas Christiansen, with the Danish often sticking with the same back four except for injuries and suspensions.

No changes are expected to be made to the rearguard as the concluding and decisive half of the campaign beckons.

However, former Leeds star Noel Whelan feels the left-back could do with a better attacking player than Gaetano Berardi.

The Swiss has featured in 12 games this term, and has been impressive in his defensive duties, but just 8 crosses into the box have come from him.

Right-back Luke Ayling – who has played every minute of the campaign- has delivered 45 crosses, while the club’s former left-back Charlie Taylor had made 67 crosses around this time last season.

Despite his lack of attacking threat down the flank, Berardi has managed to establish himself as the starter in the position ahead of Vurnon Anita and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson.

Nevertheless, it’s one decision Whelan feels must be looked into, telling BBC Radio Leeds: “Left hand side definitely needs to be sorted out. Berardi is fantastic, gives 100 per cent and you’d definitely look to have him out on the field.

“But I just feel on that left hand side we need more happening down there because it all seems to come from Ayling and that right hand side.

“They need that little bit of help going forward because these days your wing-back is your left midfielder and your left winger.”

Leeds midfielders and forwards have been solely responsible for creating the goalscoring chances, with Ayling managing just one despite all his crosses.

Berardi appears to be playing exactly by Christiansen’s rules, and as long as he keeps delivering at the back, he will most likely retain his spot.
