Scottish football pundit urges Rangers to take time with managerial appointment

Rangers are taking their time in appointing a new manager having seen their gamble on Pedro Caixinha fail.

The Gers have eyes on Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes, and Saturday’s 2-nil loss to Hamilton Academical at Ibrox could see the board react by fast-tracking their attempt to land the Dons boss.

However, former Motherwell star Stephen Craigan believes appointing the former Rangers man could yet be another gamble.

With close to £1million needed to release McInnes from his Aberdeen contract and the huge salary his appointment would eventually cost, the pundit feels sticking with interim boss Graeme Murty till a solid choice is made will make more sense.

Craigan said on BT Sport: “Short-term I said [regarding keeping Murty], not for the rest of his career. Buy yourself time.

“Why gamble? They gambled the last time and it didn’t work. If they have to spend £1m on McInnes and give him £1m per year, that’s a huge gamble as well. So they might not want to do that at the minute”

Frank de Boer, Michel Preud’Homme, Sam Allardyce, Alex McLeish, Ally McCoist, and Alan Pardew have all been linked with the job.

It’s widely believed Rangers are yet to meet with McInnes, with the manager himself insisting no contact has been established.

Considering how much it would cost to land him, the Light Blues would do well to take their time and consider all available options so as not to make another mistake.
