Tottenham star Eric Dier is full of pride after getting the opportunity to captain the England national team during their recent friendly international against Germany.
The Three Lions team which was made up off mainly fringe players managed to play out to a creditable 0-0 draw against the 2014 World Cup Champions.
The England national team have not had a permanent captain since Wayne Rooney announced his retirement from international football. Gareth Southgate has rotated the duties since but the team will need to appoint a permanent captain ahead of the 2018 World Cup.
Currently the candidates to get the role are Jordan Henderson, Gary Cahill, Harry Kane and it now appears that Dier is also in the mix.
“I have no idea. It is a question for Gareth (Southgate) – I couldn’t tell you to be honest,” Dier said when asked if he will be captain next time out.
“It was a very proud moment for me and my family and everyone who has helped me along the way since I was a little boy.
“I’m very proud and it is something I have aspired to since I was a young boy, there is only one thing better than playing for England and that is captaining England.
“What is in my hands is to keep working hard, keep improving, keep being me and that decision is up to the manager. I will just focus on what I control and that is my performances and the way I carry myself.”
