Former Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham star Jermain Defoe has admitted that his move to Bournemouth during the summer may have hampered his hopes of making the England squad for the 2018 World Cup.

The veteran striker joined the Cherries during the summer in order to boost his World Cup hopes following Sunderland’s relegation from the Premier League last season.

He has however started just six League games since joining the Cherries and was substituted at half time during the clubs weekend defeat against Chelsea.

Defoe scored for the Three Lions against Lithuania in April and manager Gareth Southgate then admitted that he could be in the World Cup squad.

Based on the way that things are going, Defoe will not achieve his goal of being in the World Cup squad given that the likes of Jamie Vardy, Daniel Sturridge, Marcus Rashford and Harry Kane have all been among the goals for their respective clubs.
