Tottenham striker Fernando Llorente has spoken out about why he opted to reject the advances of Chelsea and join Tottenham during the summer transfer window.
Following his impressive exploits for Swansea last season, during which he played a key role in helping the club avoid relegation from the Premier League, the two London giants became interested in signing the veteran Spanish striker and he eventually joined Spurs where he will serve as competition and cover for Harry Kane this season.
Llorente has since spoken out about why he opted to join Spurs. Though he will likely get less game time than he did last season, this will offer him the opportunity to earn improved wages as well as the possibility of winning silverware.
He said: “It was difficult decision to make. Conte signed me at Juve and wanted me to join him at Chelsea. He had tried to sign me in January as well. Chelsea, however, failed to reach an agreement with Swansea and Tottenham were much quicker than the Blues.
“Pochettino called me on the 30th of August and I was attracted by his project. I thought I would have joined Chelsea but in the end Tottenham were quicker to reach an agreement with Swansea and they signed me. I’d have joined Chelsea but for all these reasons I eventually joined Spurs.
“I knew Pochettino. I knew he worked well at Espanyol and Southampton. He changed everything at Tottenham in three years. He is such a great manager, the project is amazing here. I am really happy to have joined Tottenham.”
