Mourinho gives strange reason why Manchester United did not attack against Liverpool

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has defended the defensive tactics that he utilized for his team during their 0-0 draw against Liverpool on Saturday by claiming that he had no players on the bench who could have made the game a more exciting encounter.

Though Liverpool dominated the game, Romelu Lukaku did have an opportunity to give the Red Devils the lead shortly before half time.  It seemingly looked as if United, who had scored 21 times prior to the game from several matches, were playing for a draw and in the end they did get what they wanted.

Mourinho had to do without Paul Pogba and Maroune Fellaini for the match due to injury and he felt that his squad did not have enough pedigree to make the game exciting.

Mourinho told Sky Sports: “I was feeling that I need my bench but we had no bench. I need to play against their three – Henderson, Can and Wijnaldum – with power and energy and we had no power and energy.

“I had [Ander] Herrera and [Nemanja] Matic and no-one on the bench to make a difference. If I have solutions on the bench then I can do things like I did before in the victories at Swansea and Southampton.”
